Review Music and Build a Following

Article by Heart Music

If you are passionate about music and pretty good at writing, why not start a blog to review the music you listen to? With today’s social web you can utilise tools such as Twitter and Digg to promote your reviews and build up a following over time.

In this article we give 3 tips on how you can amass a following through your album reviews.

1. Write lots of content

This sort of goes without saying, but I will hammer it home anyway – write lots of content, and write it often! Too many blogs go stale after a few weeks because the author gives up, having not reached a million readers in under a month he feels his efforts are in vain. This is simply not true – Rome was not built in a day – in fact it took about 500 years. Your blog won’t take that long to kick off, but in relative terms expect to work on it for at least 6 months before you get some real visitors!

2. Share everything

We live in a social world now. I started using the internet in 1998 and it felt like a desolate place. Now, everybody is tweeting, facebooking, digging… make sure you add social bookmarking and sharing links to each review you write and also ensure you set the example by sharing the content yourself!

3. Include imagery

Turns out people love to look at pictures, and one big block of text just won’t hold the users interest for long. If you can, include images. This can include band pictures, artwork or even just the artist’s logo. Imagery will hold the reader’s interest for longer meaning your review has a stronger impact.

If you do decide to enter the world of music journalism, beware that it is quite saturated. This does not mean, however, it is full of good writers. Be persistent and strong with your writing and you can be one of the few that creates sustainable success.
